And it should :/ the current Elantra is a better looking car than even the STI. Now if only they made an Elantra WRX HTI...
edit: Why did I not know about this?

Holy cow! The ressemblance is so obvious.

This is dumb, because any compact sized car is going to have a similar side profile silhouette.

Meh, they're not that close. The fender bulges add a lot of character in the WRX. Plus the C & D pillars look nicer, and the headlights don't have the 90's econocar look to them.
I think the general small 4-door proportions, plus side-on shot and same color are modifying the real comparison too much.

I am so tired of seeing people compare 4 door compact/midsize cars like this. Let me see you design a 4 wheel, 4 door sedan, with headlights, taillights and windows all around. I guarantee you it will look like every other car out there. Unless they are going to make a car look like a futuristic car sketch it is going to look similar to other cars in proportion and shape. The fact that people need to make sure they are the same color to try and help their case is the funniest. Why don't you just photoshop the wheels, and the fenders and the wing onto the Elantra just to show how close they are? People act as if the designers at Subaru were like "Hey what should the new WRX look like? I dunno lets just copy the Elantra and a little bit of Accord and maybe some Corolla and call it a day."

All cars of the class with be pretty close. Besides the basic requirements of 4 wheels, 4 doors, standard exterior features, and 6 pieces of glass, there are government regulations. The regulations dictate how tall, long, how high head lights and tail lights are, etc, a car can be for a class. They then also engineer them following crash safety guide lines that further restrict over hang distances and the like.
By the time you are done, you have a generic clone vehicle to start building from. It's only going to get worse as time goes on and more regulations are added... bureaucracy only grows, it never willingly shrinks.

I'd like to copy this post onto every one of those comparison comments on the FP. Because fuuuuuuuuck!
